Cloud Hosting Comparison: AWS vs Azure vs GCP for Malta

By Born Digital Studio Team Malta

Choosing a cloud provider is a decision that has long-term implications for your architecture, costs, and compliance posture. For Malta-based businesses, the decision involves additional considerations around EU data residency, latency to European users, and GDPR compliance. We have deployed production workloads across all three major providers and can offer a practical comparison based on real-world experience.

AWS: The Broadest Service Catalogue

Amazon Web Services remains the market leader with the widest array of services — over 200 at last count. For Malta businesses, AWS offers EU regions in Frankfurt, Ireland, Milan, Stockholm, Spain, and Zurich. The sheer breadth of services means you can find a managed solution for almost any workload, from simple web hosting on Lightsail to complex machine learning pipelines on SageMaker.

The downside is complexity. AWS's pricing model is notoriously difficult to predict, and the management console can overwhelm teams without dedicated cloud engineering expertise. However, for mature teams, AWS offers the most flexibility and the deepest integration ecosystem.

Azure: The Enterprise and Microsoft Choice

If your organisation already uses Microsoft 365, Active Directory, or runs .NET applications, Azure is the natural choice. Its integration with the Microsoft ecosystem is seamless, and enterprise licensing bundles can significantly reduce costs. Azure has EU regions across the continent, including specific offerings for data sovereignty compliance.

Azure excels in hybrid cloud scenarios where on-premises infrastructure must integrate with cloud services. Its developer tools (Visual Studio integration, Azure DevOps) provide a polished experience for .NET teams. The trade-off is that Azure's documentation and service naming are less intuitive than its competitors, and the portal can be sluggish.

Google Cloud: Developer Experience and Data

GCP is the smallest of the three major providers but excels in specific domains: data analytics (BigQuery is exceptional), Kubernetes (GKE was the first managed Kubernetes service), and machine learning. Its pricing is often more transparent, with sustained-use discounts applied automatically rather than requiring upfront commitments.

For web application hosting, GCP's Cloud Run provides a compelling serverless container platform that combines the flexibility of containers with the simplicity of serverless. Firebase offers an excellent developer experience for mobile and web applications. EU regions are available in Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, and Warsaw.

EU Data Residency Considerations

For Malta businesses handling personal data of EU citizens, data residency is not optional — it is a GDPR requirement. All three providers offer EU regions, but you must actively configure your services to use them. Data can inadvertently cross borders through logging services, CDN caches, or backup replication if not configured correctly. Audit your entire data flow, not just your primary compute region.

Making the Decision

  • Choose AWS if you need the widest service selection, plan to use many managed services, or require specific niche services only AWS offers.
  • Choose Azure if your organisation is Microsoft-centric, you need hybrid cloud capabilities, or you run .NET workloads.
  • Choose GCP if data analytics is central to your business, you are building on Kubernetes, or you value developer experience and pricing simplicity.

At Born Digital, we are cloud-agnostic in our recommendations. We select the provider that best matches each client's specific requirements, existing stack, and team capabilities. The best cloud is the one your team can operate effectively and that meets your compliance obligations — not the one with the largest marketing budget.
